Conference Overview

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian Association of Practice Managers Ltd (AAPM) are pleased to announce that GP10, their combined national conference, will be held at the Cairns Convention Centre 6-9 October.

This year the two organisations have joined forces to create a conference that is relevant to the much broader general practice community and a range of allied health practitioners.

The conference will focus on the following key themes, and delegates are invited to submit an abstract on these topics:

We expect approximately 1000 delegates to attend the conference. The delegates are predominantly Australian GPs, practice managers, medical educators, key influencers in Australian general practice and members of practice teams. There will be a contingent of overseas delegates.

Details about keynote speakers will be released soon.

Welcome Message from GP10 Convenor

GP10 will be held in Cairns, North Queensland, where the forest meets the sea, from 6 to 9 October 2010 at the Cairns Convention Centre. The RACGP National Rural Faculty is convening GP10 - Shape Our Future - in partnership with the Australian Association of Practice Managers. The scientific committee has developed a varied program of local, national and international speakers who will present keynote addresses, poster presentations, workshops and plenary sessions, to encourage registrants to explore possibilities in the way we may provide primary care to our patients and communities into the future.

This conference aims to be family friendly with time to explore the Cairns esplanade, the reef and the rainforest. The weather in Cairns in October is pleasantly warm at temperatures between 21 and 29 degrees so it will be a great time to enjoy quality education, meetings with colleagues new and old and enjoy all the tropical north has to offer. Please join us in Cairns in October 2010 as we shape our future.

Welcome Message from Scientific Program Chair

On behalf of the Scientific Committee I look forward to welcoming you to sunny North Qld for GP10.  Please join with us to ‘Shape Our Future’ as we enjoy a range of stimulating educational sessions and networking opportunities. The programme features international and national keynote speakers including Prof Michael Kidd from Flinders University, RACGP President from 2002-06 and Dean Barton Smith, Olympian and Executive Officer of AAPM.

In addition to focusing on some of the unique features of northern Australia – rural, remote, Indigenous and tropical health – the program will have an emphasis on practice management, e-health and innovation. We cannot ‘Shape Our Future’ without considering the next generation, so will have many sessions of interest to students and Registrars. Reflecting the voice of the future, our facilitators for the entire conference will be a medical student and a GP Registrar. Other sessions will feature the extraordinary ways that ordinary GPs shape their futures, and the amazing things that they do.

So please consider submitting an abstract by the 30 April 2010. Your choices include workshops, short papers, posters, or facilitated poster sessions with discussion around a central theme. And why not bring your family along to enjoy a few days of the legendary FNQ hospitality this October? See you there.

Welcome Message from AAPM

GP10 ‘Shape Our Future’ is a joint venture for the Australian Association of Practice Managers (AAPM) and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). This is an exciting initiative and allows the opportunity for practice teams to access education and information that is relevant to everyone – not just practitioners or managers.

The program has a strong focus on ehealth and the business of medicine and is designed to have a broad range of appeal for all, not only general practice but across the whole healthcare industry.

The plenary sessions have been designed to cater for all delegates: medical practitioners, practice managers and students.  AAPM CEO, Dean Barton-Smith is one of many talented keynote speakers.

We look forward to seeing our fellow practice managers at the conference in Cairns in October.
