The fundamentals of pain workshop – a multidisciplinary introduction to contemporary pain management

Thursday 7 October - 11.00 - 6.00 pm

Active Learning Module all day workshop
Cairns Convention Centre
Meeting Room 7

Michel Coppieters, Malcolm Johnson, David Jones and Stephen Leow The RACGP are proud to present an eminent panel of presenters at this stimulating workshop which includes three lectures and interactive case studies.

We will enlighten providers on how they can play a pivotal role in managing the pain crisis throughout Australia, by providing quality education and useful knowledge that can be incorporated into their practice environment and demonstrate the latest techniques.

The Neurobiology of Pain

This session will provide an overview of the multifaceted nature of pain. Peripheral mechanisms involved in inflammatory nociceptive pain and neuropathic pain will be discussed as well as central mechanisms present in people with persistent pain.

The Psychosocial Influences on Pain

This session provides an update on this important aspect of pain which is often neglected. The history and current evidence for several of the most influential of these variables, including pain related fear and catastrophising as well as the research that hints at the biological processes that underpin their effects, will be presented.

The Medications for Pain Relief

This session will portray quality use of opioids by integrating knowledge of main biologic pain / pain inhibition mechanisms with actions of medications aimed at controlling them, to facilitate rational analgesic choices and combinations (synergism, multimodal and polypharmacy).

Pain is one of the most common reasons for presentation at a GP consultation. Unfortunately pain education is often inadequate which is reflected in the suboptimal treatment of pain.

This workshop will help to provide the basis for the better understanding and treatment of pain.
