Marine envenomation – QA&CPD activity on the reef
Due to a significant amount of interest in the QA&CPD marine envenomation tour, we have had the opportunity to upgrade to an exclusive day charter on the reef with Sunlover Cruises to Fitzroy Island.
Sunday 10 October 2010 - 8.30am – 3.30pm
Tickets: $195 per adult
Receive two Category 2 QA&CPD points.
Make the most of your time in Cairns during GP10 and extend your stay with this exciting reef tour.
Fitzroy Island is a continental island located 22 kilometres east of Cairns. It became an island when sea levels rose at the end of the last ice age, flooding a plain between a hill that is now Fitzroy Island, and what is now Cape Grafton. Over the 10,000 years since that time, extensive coral reefs have formed in the bay on the protected western side of the island, and lush rainforest has flourished on it’s shore.
Whilst aboard the Sunlover Cruises catamaran, you can learn more about marine envenomation during two half hour presentations, whilst travelling to and from Fitzroy Island.
This activity offers two Category 2 QA&CPD points, and focuses on the most common and significant venomous marine creatures, the path physiology, effects of their venoms and recent research advances.
The presentation will be delivered by Dr Jim Reeves, an Emergency Physician based at the Cairns Base Hospital. He has almost 20 years of experience living and working in Cairns as well as a period in the Torres Strait Islands to the north. Although his specialty is Emergency Medicine, he has worked extensively with the regional helicopter retrieval service and Royal Flying Doctor Service throughout the region and Cape York and Gulf country.
The animals discussed in depth will include:
- The box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) one of the most venomous creatures on the planet
- The group of smaller jellyfish that cause the infamous Irukanji syndrome
- Stingray envenomation and injuries
- Stonefish (fresh and salt water) envenomation – including Dr Jim Reeve’s personal experience.
The presentation will also explore other unique and fascinating venomous animals that reside in Far North Queensland including the blue-ringed octopus, cone shells and sea snakes.
Inclusions are as follows:
- Return air-conditioned coach transfers from the hotel Novotel (walking distance from the Sebel and Cairns Harbour Lights)
- Transfers to and from Fitzroy Island by Sunlover Cruises catamaran
- Reef talk by marine Interpreter
- 3.5- 4 hours on reef / island
- Snorkelling tuition
- High quality snorkelling equipment (masks, flippers, snorkel)
- Buoyancy snorkel vests
